"The body is meant to be seen, not all covered up"- Marilyn Monroe
I visited a Jumjibang this weekend for the first time since I've been to Korea and man was it a weird experience. A Jumjibang is a 24/7 spa with hot tubs and body scrubs available to your disposal. You can also sleep at the spa on the floor or in a separate room depending how comfortable you want to be since the rooms have aircon and beds.
After a lovely party, I crashed in a sense, with new friends from all over the world I couldn't wait to go to bed and there was two options, a Jumjibang or Hostal on the table. But let me first tell you about this party. So after the Nanji braai Phillip and I hopped on a train and headed to Itaewon, Seoul to go to the farewell party of his one friend and since it was a farewell there was a few other people as well. As I started to speak to all of the people that was there it became abundantly clear that we were definitely an interesting crowd all together. Where on earth will you meet people from almost every continent at one party? Apparently in Korea. There was people from New Zeeland, Mexico, Sweden, Germany, England, Scotland, Ireland, Korea, Wisconsin, South Africa, Oxfordshire and Illinois. And to be quite honest every single person had an interesting story to tell and had a life of traveling and adventure that really cannot be replaced by other awesome things. We went to a Irish pub, The Wolfhound, after building a human piramide. Things got a little ruff for the small apartment we chilled at.
After The Wolfhound it was time to get a place where I could lay my head and just sleep. After all the festivities of the day I was pretty tired. Phillip showed me a Jumjibang nearby where we slept the night. It sounds completely normal accommodation wise but little did I know how the whole system works. When you arrive you have a choice: a room or the floor. We chose a room. It's just way more comfortable than sleeping on the floor but of course it's more expensive as well. Then you get one key for two lockers, one for your shoes and the other one for your clothes. They also give you a new set of clothes that extremely sexy. The room was on the 3rd floor. Men and women enter the rest of the spa by separate entrances. On the ground floor you have to take a shower and get changed into the clothing they provide before proceeding to the next floor. Now this is where I felt a little uncomfortable.
Firstly you have to get undressed and lock up your belongings before going for a shower. The towels they give you here is as big as a face cloth back at home which means you can't really cover anything up due to the lack of material. You walk past a little shop and all the basins, where naked woman are titivating, to the spa side where the showers are. There you can get into a hot tub of your desired temperature (there was like 7 tubs) if you'd want too and you can get a full body scrub as well. The scrubs are apparently painful. I'll have to try it sometime though. In my case being a blonde in a shower didn't really help me since all the women were staring at me. I would like to believe it's because of my blonde hair and not my sexy butt. After showering you get dressed into the clothing they provided and then you proceed to your room. I felt a little privacy invaded after that.
The accommodation areas were so hot I couldn't believe people actually slept. I had two fans on me and still struggled. They heat the floors for the people sleeping on the floors but even in our room it was incredibly hot. There is some theory behind it all but I didn't find out what it was.
All in all it was a good experience and definitely worth it. It's always nice climbing in bed clean after having a ruff, fun-filled day.
